Jam with Corinne May 18th

Jam with Corinne
Corinne’s aloha for Hawaiian music grew from being born and raised on the beautiful Garden Island of Kauai. Music was encouraged by her parents, and older siblings sang or played multiple instruments. Her first instrument was the piano which she played at an early age at St. Catherine’s of Alexandria School in the town of Kapaa. Later, she accompanied the church choir and high school chorus on the organ, and was inspired by teachers and local musicians.

Frequent kanikapilas (jam sessions) brought ohana (family) and friends together after gatherings. Guitars, ukuleles, and piano were played, and impromptu singing and hula often followed.

After moving to Oregon many years ago, she picked up her dad’s Kamaka ukulele and was inspired to play in local ukulele jams. There she met jam mates and mentors who played, sang, and danced hula in the “local Hawaiian style”. These experiences brought back those rich multicultural recollections of island life as a young gal. She is currently a member of the local Na Lei Eha Hawaiian band and has performed at local luaus, wineries, celebrations of life, fundraisers and holiday parties.

After having a successful career in health care, she is enjoying life through meme (music), ukulele, mahjong, hanafuda, walking, traveling and enjoying the beautiful PNW.
